Stephanie Ann Whited

yes, we are connected

connected?
you say those things so easily
like, you ‘can see inside of me’
but I’m always turning away

then you think you’ve found
a secret window to me?

no, you see, I say
our relation is rigged!

and no, I do not assume responsibility
because we are both equal parts
of a + b = c

where a is you, and b is me
and c is what we become from one another, or,
what we take away
(I from you, you from me)
on our way to solvent or solve
or possibly dissolve
to see what we can make
out of unequal charges.

but, if: we both hold the same sign
maybe, if, then: thereÕs a chance

for c to be we and end positively.

no, no, no, we cannot leave the outcome to our offspring
because we canÕt even meet eye to eye
with me turning away when I know youÕll look
unless I set up a mirror or two as parentheses

to deflect your sight
isolate your plight and
distract you with light

as it might suspend our sequence, break the link,
our chain, so to speak

without knowledge of where we might even meet
assuming we decide to
stick around during a few rotations in which nothing is sound
(of the like we have known between us)

producing a result
we have yet to define:

a new fate to be bet

warbling and warbling
like a wheel of roulette

but with variables and simple equations

that stops where a = b, if:

a is you

and

b is me

and = is two little lines of sight
